A Room of One's Own Virginia Woolf (ISBN: 0192834843)
Encouraging men and women to shrug off their sex and write androgynously in order to find the proper reality of things, Woolf argues that gender-roles are a public death sentence on creativity. Her predictions for the future for Women in the arts is a spookily accurate forecast.

The Laugh of the Medusa Helene Cixous (ISBN: ??)
An essay trying to determine how Women can write within a patriarchal language system

The Beauty Myth Naomi Wolf (ISBN: 0099861909)
An enlightening read that high-lights the damaging nature of gender roles. Much controversy over whether Wolf is encouraging a new breed of "paranoid feminism" or a liberated body-image. A must read for anyone who has suffered from or has been touched by an eating disorder.

The Bloody Chamber Angela Carter (ISBN: 0099588110)
A beautiful retelling of traditional fairy tales, with a feminist twist

The Bedside Companion to the History of Western Art The Guerrilla Girls (ISBN: 014025997X)
A brief history on how males have dominated the art scene and discouraged or obscured women's involvement. Sceptical, witty, wry.

GRRRLS: Viva Rock Divas Amy Raphael (ISBN: 0312141092 )
A collection of interviews with women in music and their take on becoming successful in a male-driven business. Good words from Bjork, P.J Harvey, Kim Gordon and more.

Pretty In Punk Lauren LeBlanc (ISBN: 0813526515)
An interesting investigation into how girls reconcile their 'femininity' in the face of a deliberately masculine subcultural identity like the Punk (or hardcore) movement. Interesting ideas on resisting gender roles.

DIY: The Rise of Lo-Fi Culture Amy Spencer (ISBN: 0714531057)
Traces the origins of the DIY ethic to the skiffle movement of the 50's, the hippies of the 60's, 70's-80's Punk and beyond. Only published this year so pretty relevant.

Listen Up: Voices from the Next Feminist Generation [ed.] Barbara Findlen (ISBN: 1580050549)
Lesbian feminists, Native-American feminists, Black feminists, Bisexual feminists, Jewish feminists... all women. All re-tell their stories and share their experiences. Fascinating insight into the growth of finding strength in identity, and the personal views of being young, 'minority' feminists.

The Women's Room Marilyn French (ISBN: 1860492827)
"I underwent a complete metamorphosis - I felt that the book touched me personally and somehow gave an insight into my own life and those of friends around me. It made me determined to change my unhappy life and never again settle for a poor substitute for happiness." - Bev Blackman c/o Amazon.co.uk

924 Gilman: The Story So Far Compiled by Brian Edge (cat# MGMAXIM924 / MAXIMUMROCKANDROLL )
A massive 416-page book documenting the history of Berkeley, California's 924 Gilman Street all-ages punk club/collective.

Mean Time Carol Anne Duffy (ISBN: 0845643035)
Heartfelt book of wonderful poetry including "Valentine", the beautiful exploration through words of the love between two people.

Frock Rock: Women Performing Popular Music Mavis Bayton (ISBN: 019816615X)
From the history to the makings of being a female performer, Frock Rock explores the social factors that keep women from playing and those routes that have enabled women's involvement.

Women, Culture, and Politics Angela Davis (ISBN: 0679724877)
A collection of radically political essays by an amazing and inspiring feminist political activist. Davis writes in an engaging and straight-forward way on some of the most important issues facing feminists: racism, poverty and militarism. This may have been published in 1984 but is still essential reading for any feminist worth her salt.

Skin Dorothy Allison (ISBN: 0044409443)
Dorothy Allison writes beautifully, painfully and truthfully on sex, being queer, class, childhood, being a writer and more. Radically feminist and completely captivating. Some of her other great books include 'Trash' and 'Bastard out of Carolina'.

Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity Judith Butler (ISBN: 0415924995)
Classic gender studies text, which threw open the debate about the naturalness of sex and gender distinctions. Often cited as a key text of 'Queer Theory' and a must-read for anyone who doesn't want to behave the way their given 'gender' dictates they should.

Talking Back: Thinking Feminist - Thinking Black bell hooks (ISBN: 0907179401) From arguably the most prominent voice of Black feminism. bell hooks writes about what it means to 'talk back' to white supremacist patriarchy, and how to challenge ourselves to build a real feminist revolution.

Persepolis Marjane Satrapi (ISBN: 037571457X)
Really great comic about the life of a girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution

The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory Carol Adams (ISBN: 0826411843)
Brilliant and thought provoking analysis of the way patriarchy reduces both animals and women to 'pieces of meat'. A compelling argument for why feminist theory can be strengthened by being informed by a vegetarian critique, and why feminists should care about the plight of animals.
